Department of Economics
 
Department of Economics was established in the year 1984.There were only 18 students in the beginning. It was a small department at that time. The number of students has increased to 1000 during the present academic year 2010-11. It is quite evident that the department has grown remarkably in the last 25 years. The department offers quality education in the subject of Economics. There are many programmes in BA course in each of which Economics is offered as one of the compulsory subjects. The programmes have been introduced as per Bangalore University regulations. Economics has been one of the most opted subjects by students studying in BA. There are wider options available to the students to select economics as one of the compulsory subjects.
 
 
The teachers in the department are most competent and dedicated. They are adopting innovative methods in teaching. The teachers are desirous of updating their knowledge by attending seminars, conferences and workshops. Some teachers have even presented papers in seminars. Two teachers hold doctorate degree in economics. The students are encouraged to participate in extension and extra-curricular activities. The teachers also inculcate leadership qualities in students. There have been good results in each semester examinations. Some of the students have scored distinctive marks. The department is motivating young graduates to pursue post graduation in Economics. Every year some students join MA in Economics. The department has its own representation in university. The department has been in touch with commerce and Management department by teaching Business economics. All students have been encouraged to read economic journals, Magazines, and articles appearing in leading news papers. The students have been guided by the faculty to acquire knowledge about current affairs relating to national and international events in the field of economics. The department proposes to introduce post graduation in Economics. It is also planned to form Economics forum. The department of economics has emerged as a leading department in the college.

K.M.Mayige Gowda: He had undergone Teacher’s training in students counseling for 21 days at NIMHANS , Bangaluru. Since then he is actively involved in students counseling. He has become NSS Programme officer for second time and organizes special camps in remote villages of Channapatna Taluk. He has been conducting extension and extra-curricular activities through NSS. Blood donation camps were conducted by him through NSS and donated blood to the needy people and also to Government Hospitals. His contributions in this arena are invaluable. He is in the habit of writing articles also on varied subjects. Some of his articles have been published in local news papers. Once he was columnist in local paper. He analyses general budget presented by Central Government every year and expresses his opinion over it. He has been invited as a resource person too. He has delivered special guest lectures on many subjects in schools and colleges in the locality. He acted as judge in cultural competitions conducted by local associations. He is an eloquent speaker. He voluntarily takes part in the developmental activities of the college. He has been instrumental in the campus development. He is also a convener of alumni association of the college.
 

Dr.S. Shyamaladevi: She presented a paper on “Industrial water pollution” A case study of cost abatement in Bangalore at national seminar on “Environmental changes in India” organized by the School of Economics, Madhurai Kamaraja University sponsored by UGC held in 2005.The above paper was published. She also presented paper on “Environmental pollution in the post reformer in state level seminar entitled” The impact of Economic reforms on Indian Economy” held in Bangalore. Another paper was presented by her entitled “Micro Finance and policy implications for women empowerment” in UGC sponsored seminar on “significance of Micro finance in poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment in India” issues and challenges organized in Kanakapura in 2010.

Presented a paper on “child labour in Beedi Industry”-A case study of channapatna town at Indian labour Economics Conference held at Thiruvananthapura, Kerala.
